"Ha ha ha! Face the gods' wrath!" —Boosting an attack during battle

Deputy Cubaryi is a character in Octopath Traveler II. She is the secondary antagonist of Temenos's path, as well as the boss of his Chapter 3: Stormhail Route.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

As a high-ranking member of the Sacred Guard, Cubaryi wears a pink Sacred Guard uniform, with armor and a colored cloak. She has a distinct helmet that covers her whole face.

Personality[]

At first glance, Cubaryi appears to be a pious but generally unpleasant knight who enforces the teachings of the Sacred Flame. She and Temenos do not get along very well, as demonstrated by them calling each other a "crow" and "hound" respectively.

In reality, Cubaryi is one of many members of a plot to infiltrate the Order of the Sacred Flame and bring about the return of the Shadow. She relishes in the devious deeds she performs for this purpose, such as witnessing the killing of Crick and the prospect of killing Temenos. Despite her depravity, she is both respectful and fully loyal to Kaldena; even after she is defeated and cornered by Temenos, she refuses to bow to the inquisitor's demands regarding Kaldena's whereabouts and dies without giving him any information.

Story[]

(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...)
The following section contains potential story spoilers!

Shortly after Pontiff Jörg is found dead in Flamechurch: Cathedral by Temenos and Crick, Cubaryi and the rest of the Sacred Guard arrive at the scene and take control of the investigation after the monster responsible was killed. They tell Temenos and Crick to leave, taking nothing with them.

After the pontiff's funeral, Cubaryi approaches both Temenos and Crick, asking them if they found anything unusual in the cathedral. Temenos dismissed her before he and Crick set off for the library.

Later on, she appears before them again, telling Crick he has been reassigned and ordering him to pack his things.

Cubaryi returns in Canalbrine as one of the Sacred Guard members investigating the recent murders alongside Captain Kaldena, Crick, and Ort. After Temenos and Crick subdue the killer, Vados the Architect, onboard the Sacred Guard's ship, Cubaryi and Kaldena arrive at the scene with other members of the Guard. They arrest Vados, taunting Temenos before departing the area.

Later, in the Sacred Guard Headquarters in Stormhail, Cubaryi appears inside the underground chambers to confront Temenos while the inquisitor investigates the circumstances leading to Crick's demise. She reveals her true allegiance to Kaldena and her cult, declaring that Kaldena herself killed Crick. Cubaryi then draws her sword, taking satisfaction in her orders to "bring the hound to heel," and engages Temenos in battle. However, she is bested by the inquisitor and mortally wounded. Temenos attempts to interrogate her for information regarding Kaldena and her plans, but Cubaryi refuses to cooperate, telling him to "go to hell" before she dies.

Etymology[]

"Cubaryi" may be a reference to the mariana crow, whose scientific name is Corvus kubaryi. This name alludes to Temenos's referring to her and other Sacred Guard members as "crows."

Trivia[]

  • A scrapped side quest exists in the game's code called Bandelam's Next Chapter, which details his escape from Frigit Isle alongside Deputy Cubaryi after the game's events as one of the choices to complete it. However, this contradicts multiple plot points at the game's end, as Frigit Isle is shut down and Cubaryi herself is deceased by the end of the game's events.
  • Deputy Cubaryi’s battle sprite strongly resembles that of Balogar from the original Octopath Traveler; both bosses have a similar pose, wear masks and flowing robes, and wield a double-edged sword with the blade pointed forward and covered in magical energy.
  • The shielding effect that Cubaryi uses in battle is identical to the effect of the cleric's Sacred Shield ability.
