- "This here's Cobbleston, our little home in the hills." —Villager at Cobbleston's entrance
Cobbleston is a town in Octopath Traveler. It is a small village located in the western Highlands and is the starting location of Olberic Eisenberg's story.
Description[]
Cobbleston is a humble hamlet with an agrarian economy, surrounded by pens of sheep and vegetable patches, including cabbage and what appears to be sprouts of wheat. Fog drifts across the town, and its grass is a dry yellow color, suggesting an inhospitable climate.

Olberic Chapter 1 complete
Olberic Chapter 4 complete
Etymology[]
"Cobbleston" is comprised of "cobble" + "ston(e)," referring to the village's cobblestone buildings. Notably, the final "e" is dropped from the town's name, granting the title a quaintly shortened sound, as if to reflect the settlement's humble size.
Trivia[]
- The price to restore reputation in Cobbleston is 2,000 leaves.
- According to the Villager outside its tavern, Cobbleston has the "best mead in the Highlands."
- During his Chapter 1, Olberic can rest in his bed for free. This feature becomes inaccessible after the chapter's completion.
- According to the Cheerful Storyteller, "Once, in an age long lost to us, a wise dragon was said to live in the mountains of this land. It was able to speak the words of men, yet it wielded a mysterious power beyond that of any mortal."
- A calico cat can be seen washing itself on one of the benches in lower Cobbleston.
- The dialogue of a few townspeople reveals that the brigands were imprisoned after Olberic's Chapter 1 ("With those brigands under lock and key, our village is at peace once more"; "The brigands are locked away, but we're keepin' up the patrols"). The fact that the brigands' leader, Gaston, is subsequently left to roam free about the village suggests that he is an exception on parole.
- The Village Headman's biography reveals that he lost his wife in the fires of war, which led him to lay down his arms once and for all. Without hesitation he welcomes those bearing similar scars to his own, and refrains from asking after the ghosts that haunts them - so he may very well have sensed a kindred spirit in Olberic.
- The calm demeanor and sound judgment of the more level-headed of the town's two Watchmen has caught the headman's eye as a potential successor.
- The Captain of the Watch was formerly a mercenary but took a grave wound in his knee, causing him to wander until the headman showed him kindness which he has sworn to repay.
- According to one Villager's biography, the wool of the sheep raised in Cobbleston's windswept lands can command a high price at market.
- The highest reaches of the mountains near Cobbleston are home to rare apothecarial plants, as revealed by the biography of one Villager who hunts for them in secret.
- The local Courageous Cowherd sports a unique battle skill: "Manure Toss." When Challenged, he asks if his bull can join in too, and when Provoked exclaims, "These ain't from my 'erd!"
- Several of the villagers will respond to Challenge with personal familiarity to Olberic:
- Village Headman: "Ahahaha! I didn't ask you to put me through the motions.
- Dark-haired Watchman: "Berg, sir! If you can spare a moment, I would greatly appreciate a duel."
- Villager by the town entrance: "A f-fight, sir? It'd be an honor!"
- Light-haired Watchman: "Sir! Seein' as you're here an' all, how about another fencin' lesson?"
- Villager by the path to the Brigands' Den: "It'd be an honor to spar with you for once."
- Captain of the Watch: "Why, it would be an honor to spar with you again."
- The townspeople of Cobbleston tend to be quite animated in their Path Action dialogue, as evidenced by a few noteworthy responses:
- "I-I'll follow you to the ends of the earth... And jump off them, too, if that's your will!" (Allured)
- "Bloomin' heck! Is that a monster?" (Provoked)
- "This is hardly the time an' place for dancing—if that's what it was meant to be!" (Allure failed)
- "Marry! I've seen wild boars lighter on their feet, and more graceful, too!" (Allure failed)
- "By my troth, you're a pretty miss. Oh, do let me serve you!" (Guided)
- "My teacher! Summon me any time, and I shall follow!" (Parting Ways when Allured)
- "Hoho! I find your youthful exuberance to be contagious." (Allured)
- "Be still my beatin' heart! M'lady, I shall serve you for life!" (Allured)
- "Stunnin', lass, simply stunnin'. My heart is yours." (Allured)
- "You can always put a spell on me, my dear!" (Parting Ways when Allured)
- "Oh, holy graciousness, please let me be your servant!" (Guided)
- "Egads, I think I'm in love! Let me stand by your side an' never leave it!" (Allured)
- "Gods a'mercy! Shoo, shoo! I won't be some monster's supper, you hear me!?" (Provoked)
- "What are you up to? 'Pon my faith, you're a proper troublemaker, aren't you!?" (Provoke failure)
- "Heavens be! What's I done to deserve this!?" (Provoked)
- "By the gods' own breeches! What's that monster doin' here!?" (Provoked)
- When Square Enix approached Yasunori Nishiki to be the composer for Octopath Traveler, he was asked to first write a song for internal preview, and "Cobbleston, Nestled in the Hills" is the theme he wrote for the first town. As such, he composed it with the intention of it being a very ordinary town theme. That said, while the beginning has an orthodox feel, the music develops in a rather unconventional way after that, and the rhythm changes frequently—so perhaps this is where the composer's creativity really emerges. Save for the layered strings, the whole theme was recorded live.[1]
