Coastlands Emblem
The Coastlands (コーストランド地方, Kōsutorando Chihō) are a tropical seaside region in eastern Orsterra. The region includes the town of Rippletide (which is home to the merchant Tressa), Goldshore, and Grandport.
Bordered by the brilliant expanse of the ocean, the Coastlands is characterized by its sea-sprayed rocks, its glittering golden sand, and the cry of the seagulls that glide through its skies. This region is home to swathes of pristine beach and murky subterranean grottoes, inhabited by idyllic seaside settlements. Given its proximity to the ocean, the Coastlands offers many ports of naval commerce, attracting merchants and pirates in droves.
Although the Coastlands was once ruled by the Kingdom of Grandport, the kingdom was destroyed in a war with an alliance of Flatlands tribes (which later developed into the Kingdom of Wold centered in Atlasdam). Currently, self-governance in the Coastlands is carried out on a city-by-city basis.[1]
The Coastlands are bordered by the Flatlands to the north and the Highlands to the south. In the heart of this region lies the Shrine of the Trader.

Trivia[]
- The Coastlands was the first area designed for Octopath Traveler. When translating its concept art to the game screen, the developers aimed to make it a whimsical region, with fresh and dynamic towns to provide a perfect match for Tressa.[2]
- Because the Coastlands was the first designed area, its NPCs have been around since the game's prototype stage. As such, developer Shizuka Morimoto admits that he is quite attached to them.[3]
- According to the Japanese novel The Four Paths of Eight Travelers, the Coastlands contains fluorescent spiral shellfish called glassfish. Their shells and shell fragments are often strewn across beaches, though live glassfish are much rarer. Their translucent shells reflect light in beautiful hues of red and blue that make glassfishes' bodies appear to be glowing. Tressa mentions that kids in the Coastlands like to gather these shells and sell them for pocket money, and some people make a livelihood trawling beaches for them, making a couple leaves from each shell.
