- "No. I am Ceraphina. The one who will judge all mankind." —To Rinyuu
Ceraphina is a character in Octopath Traveler 0 and Champions of the Continent. She initially appears as a minor NPC in the Master of Power, but is later revealed to be the one behind the events of said arc (and indirectly the Master of Fame arc), becoming the main antagonist of Bestower of Fame.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Ceraphina is a young woman with long silver hair. During her time as Phina, she wore a cleric outfit of the Flamesgrace Cathedral, but switched to a more solemn white robe when revealing her true identity.
Personality[]
Because of her grandfather's death, Ceraphina is a bitter and misanthropic person obsessed with punishing humanity, a goal she's spent centuries to achieve. However, she manages to change her mind a bit after confronting the Chosen One, admitting there can be some good in humans after all.
Story[]
The granddaughter of Sage Salomon, Ceraphina witnessed his execution when she was a child, instilling in her a deep hatred towards humans. She was harassed by the villagers for being the "Butcher"'s granddaughter, as they demanded that she should bring back the relatives who died when the Gate was opened. If she could not do so, then she must die to atone for her grandfather's sins. As they cornered her, Lyblac appeared, answering Ceraphina's pleas of not wanting to die. Telling her that she only had to kill them before they killed her, Lyblac granted Ceraphina her own blood. Overflowing with dark power, Ceraphina scorched the villagers with dark flames. When the young Ceraphina asked Lyblac about this power, the witch replied that it was the power her grandfather discovered. Lyblac also informs Ceraphina that she now possesses eternal life and can live her life following her desires. Ceraphina's initial wish, to kill the villagers for executing her grandfather, turned into the resolve of punishing the mankind for their folly of shifting blame to innocent people and seeking to kill them for deeds they weren't responsible for.
Eventually Ceraphina read about the Accursed Night, the story of Odypus, the first pontiff, who in his greed tried to take control of the First Flame to prove his superiority over Graecia and humanity, but ended up burned by the Accurst Flame. His plan failed because apparently he lacked the Divine Rings and the Divine Blood from the House of Crossford. Upon seeing Jennish of Bernstein building a Forbidden Temple, attempting to reenact the ritual, and failing for lacking the necessary elements, Ceraphina was confident that she wouldn't end like the others who tried before her.[1]
She would meet Lyblac once again in the Forbidden Temple, along Mattias and Simeon. Lyblac would bestow upon her the Rings of the Charitable, Thunderblade, and Prince of Thieves, but for unknown reasons, Ceraphina bestowed the last ring on Simeon.
Ceraphina eventually met a young Rinyuu, who was a nun-in-training. After finding that Rinyuu was a Crossford, Ceraphina infiltrated into the Church as "Phina" to befriend her and keep her close.
When Orsterra was facing the menace of the Southern Tribes, Ceraphina bestowed the Ring of the Thunderblade on a young Tytos.[2] Using her position as a cleric, she would continue to monitor the actions of both the Church and the Scarlet Wings' commander. Her advice was necessary for the development of the Scarlet Elixir, which would play a fundamental role in her plan to obtain the necessary resources for the ritual.[3]
Unbeknownst to her, Lyblac would eventually use Ceraphina as a vessel to heal her own wounds after her brutal defeat against Redeye.
Master of Power[]
Ceraphina can be found in the Emberglow chapel alongside Miza and Monaris, and can be interacted with as a townsperson before the start of Bestower of Fame.
Bestower of Fame[]
Following Tytos's demise, Ceraphina, as the "New God," took control of the remains of the Scarlet Wings loyal to Tytos and reformed them into the Black Scarlet cult. Knowing about the secret behind Monaris and Miza's relationship, she took Miza hostage and appointed Monaris for the development of Velnorte's Scarlet Elixir, transforming Emberglow townspeople into villains so that her actions in Flamesgrace could go unnoticed. When Monaris fulfilled his purpose, Ceraphina took advantage of Miza's deep hatred towards him to remove him from the picture.
When the Black Scarlets launched an offensive against Flamesgrace, while the Knights Ardante were focused on the defense of both the city and the cathedral, Ceraphina snuck into the Cathedral's secret room to steal Aelfric's Lanthorn. In the middle of the battle, Sazantos realized that the true mastermind was inside the Cathedral, so he rushed to the secret room, only to find the lantern already in Ceraphina's hands. The Flameguard tried to attack her, but her darkness proved too much for Sazantos to handle, knocking him down. Ceraphina escaped to the Cave of Origin to seize the First Flame; when the Chosen One went after her, she summoned a Guardian to stall them while she kidnapped Rinyuu. With the Flame, the rings, and the divine blood in her power, Ceraphina's next destination bacame clear: the Forbidden Temple beyond Berecain.
Despite the Chosen One, Sazantos, and the Knights Ardante pursuing her, Ceraphina managed to complete the ritual and take control of the Accursed Flame, gaining an angelic form thanks to her Divine Ring. However, the ritual also revived Lyblac, who revealed that the ritual was never intended for Ceraphina to become a deity—it was all for Lyblac's own resurrection. Lyblac mocked Ceraphina for thinking she was worthy of passing judgment on humanity, claiming that only Galdera had the right to do so. After Lyblac's defeat at the hands of the Chosen One and Sazantos, Ceraphina admitted that watching the Chosen One's actions helped her regain a bit of faith in humanity. After that, she succumbed to her injuries.

Etymology[]
"Ceraphina" is a variant of the Hebrew name "Seraphina," derived from the term "seraphim" (which means "burning ones" or "fiery ones"). Seraphim are the highest-ranking angels in Judiasm and Christianity, depicted as possessing six wings and attending the presence of God. Ceraphina's name therefore symbolizes her ardent desire for judgment on humankind and her intrusion on the sacred by claiming divine responsibility, as well as foreshadowing her ultimate transformation into an angel.
Trivia[]
- Her theme, "Ceraphina, the Saint", is the only Vol.2 soundtrack playing in the Master arc. As said theme was played in some Rinyuu scenes, it's normal to assume it was Rinyuu's theme, although it's absent from the Vol.1 soundtrack.
- In Bestower of Fame, this theme is often played when "Phina" is on scene. After revealing her identity, her theme is "Encroaching upon the Forbidden", a somber version of the former; for a total of 5 themes instead of the 4 the antagonistic ringbearers have.
- It's likely that Ceraphina was the one who introduced the orphan Miza to Monaris, implying that she was monitoring the priest and planning to use him in her schemes for years.
- In the conclusion of the final clash between Ceraphina and the Knights Ardante, while the misanthrope Ceraphina ends acknowledging there may be some goodwill inside the people, Flameguard Sazantos concludes mankind is rotten beyond salvation. In that sense, she is indirectly responsible for the events leading to the Bestower of All storyline.
- The wings and halo in Ceraphina's Divine Ring form demonstrate that she has gained a portion of the power of the gods. Her design would follow the pattern for the hallowfoes enemies appearing in the Heavens.[4]
- Ceraphina is the only playable apothecary so far who doesn't have axe skills. Even if she must be equipped with axe weapons, her damage set is entirely elemental, consisting in light and dark skills.
