The Cave of Origin is a location in Octopath Traveler and the dungeon of Ophilia's Chapter 1. This sacred cavern is located in the hills east of Flamesgrace, housing the First Flame of Aelfric.
Description[]
The Cave of Origin is a frozen cave, decorated with glittering blue ice spikes, pure white snow, and atmospheric fog. Two Knights Ardante stand before the cave's entrance, guarding its holy interior from all intruders. The First Flame burns at the heart of the cavern, nestled in a stone shrine which houses a magical guardian, a stone golem designed to ensure that only worthy individuals may reach the Sacred Flame.
Story[]
Every twenty years, the chosen Flamebearer of the Order of the Sacred Flame journeys to the Cave of Origin to retrieve the Sacred Flame. The Sacred Flame is then taken to the churches of Orsterra during the Kindling.
On the day before Lianna, the chosen Flamebearer, is to travel to the Cave of Origin, Archbishop Josef, her father, suddenly collapses from illness. Ophilia Clement, Lianna's adopted sister, travels to the Cave of Origin in her stead so Lianna can stay at her father's side.
Inside the cavern Ophilia is challenged by the Guardian of the First Flame in order to prove herself worthy to carry the Sacred Flame. Ophilia defeats the Guardian and obtains Aelfric's Lanthorn, becoming the Flamebearer in Lianna's stead.

- According to Archbishop Josef, entering the Cave of Origin without the Church's permission is deemed a "grave sin." Despite this warning, Ophilia does not receive any consequences for entering the cave unauthorized.
- During her first chapter, Ophilia pauses for a brief cutscene in the middle of the dungeon, making her one of the two travelers (the other being Tressa) to pause partway through her first dungeon.
- Ophilia describes the monsters in the Cave of Origin as being like none she's ever seen, suggesting that they might protect the Flame within.
- While traveling through the cave, Ophilia describes a sensation that someone or something is watching her every move, implying that the Guardian of the Sacred Flame can perceive and monitor the presence of those who enter the cave.
