- "Saving these people comes first. As long as I can heal the sick, who I am is ultimately trivial." —Castti, affirming her duty as an apothecary
Castti Florenz is one of eight playable characters in Octopath Traveler II. She was discovered adrift at sea in a small boat and awoke without any memories; her only insights into her identity are her satchel and skills as an apothecary.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Castti has blonde hair worn in a bun at the back of her head in her primary artwork. Her clothing, stated specifically to be a uniform for a group of apothecaries in-universe, resembles clothing worn by nurses in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Europe and America, though her skirt is shorter. This consists of a light blue dress with a high collar and sleeves worn rolled up and cuffed below the elbow, a full-length white apron with a blue stripe, and a white cap similar to historical nurse's caps, also with a single blue stripe, likely secured to her hair with one or more pins. She also wears a matching light blue capelet with a hood and a pocket on the left side. She carries a brown satchel resembling a messenger bag and has a smaller pouch on a belt at her waist. Continuing with the theme of pre-Industrial western womenswear, she wears black stockings and brown boots.
In a travel banter with Hikari, he observes a bruise-like black mark on one of her arms. Castti recognizes it as scarring from some sort of swelling that she can tell was unnatural in origin, most likely some kind of poison. She notes this as unusual for a typical apothecary, as most of them wouldn't come into such direct contact with anything that dangerous.
Personality[]
Castti has amnesia, with no clues about her past other than what is in her bag. She is still as kind and gentle as she was in the past; however, she has low tolerance for those who stop her from helping those in need, be they familiar or otherwise. She's highly skilled due to years of experience, and naturally steps into a leadership role when it comes to medicine, as seen in her Chapter 2 where she does not hesitate to issue orders.
Her lack of memories weighs down her otherwise patient and kind temperament, and many of the memories she recovers only concern her more. She also struggles with why she forgot her memories in the first place. In another talk with Hikari, she admits she fears what she may uncover, in case her own mind buried the memories because of some horrible trauma.
Castti is maternal and caring, with her fellow apothecaries and Ochette nicknaming her "Mother Hen" and "Mama" respectively. Her tendency to take charge of her peers' well-being and aid those around her makes her well-liked among most who meet her. Despite her maturity, she does occasionally act mischievously. Travel banter with Agnea and Hikari shows that she gets unruly while drunk, and when Partitio says that he doesn't understand what amnesia feels like, she responds by tricking him into thinking that they "got up to all sorts of mischief" while drunk the night before.
Deep down, Castti harbors guilt regarding the lives of patients she was unable to save in the past, as revealed by Vide during the second part of her and Ochette's Crossed Paths.
History[]
"Your name is Castti Florenz, and you are an apothecary. Your tale begins in a port town of the Harborlands. Discovered adrift at sea, you awoke to the realization that you could not recall your own name. The only clues to your identity are your satchel and skills as an apothecary. Unable to ignore the nagging feeling within you, you embark on a journey to recover what you lost... “I need to rediscover who I am. And...there's something else. Something important I'm forgetting...”"
- Castti's description when selecting her.
Prior to Story[]
Castti was the leader of Eir's Apothecaries, a group of apothecaries whose motto was "extending a helping hand to all in need". During a war near Sai four years before the start of the story, the apothecaries came to tend to the ill, which won over the locals. The apothecaries also stopped by Winterbloom, where Castti helped slow the progression of a disease suffered by a woman named Rosa. Eir's Apothecaries were based out of Healeaks, where they tended to the locals from their house of healing.
One day the apothecaries return and notice something is awry. The rain is purple, and villagers are dying one by one. They deduce that the rain is the source of this calamity and go to investigate it at its source: a nearby mountain. There, they find Trousseau tending to a purple fire. Trousseau claims he is following the group's motto to its "logical" conclusion: easing people from the suffering of existence. Even while coming down with symptoms of Trousseau's poison, Castti unsuccessfully tries to reason with him. Trousseau escapes after announcing his plans to spread his poison in Timberain. Castti watches helplessly as her friends Andy and Randy sacrifice their lives to douse Trousseau's poison.
Castti and Malaya make their way back down the mountain. When Castti collapses, Malaya gives her snowdrops to buy more time. Malaya carries her to the New Delsta Harbor, where she puts Castti on a skiff, believing Castti is the most capable of saving lives and thus countering Trousseau's poison. Castti is sent out to sea with her satchel and a few snowdrops.
Story[]
Chapter 1[]
Some time later, she is found adrift by a ship's crew and taken on board. After speaking with its captain, she discovers she cannot remember anything about herself and what she did before she was found. After inquiring with the crew and finding her bag, she deduces that she was once an apothecary. At that point, the ship arrives at Canalbrine.
As she walks around town, she comes across a boy named Senah who suddenly collapsed. With the help of another apothecary named Malaya, they get him home, where Castti treats him with lycanthe antipyretic. As Castti discusses her amnesia with Malaya, the boy's older brother Sesque appears. He seems to recognize Castti's uniform--to her disadvantage, as he demands she get away from his brother. He suspects her of hurting his brother and accuses her of being "one of them": Eir's Apothecaries.
Outside, Castti is confronted by more townspeople, who claim that Eir's Apothecaries serve poison and even killed an entire town recently. The confrontation is short-lived, as one of the townspeople collapses. Soon after, word arrives that several people in town have collapsed. Castti goes to treat them all, then investigates why some townspeople have fallen ill while others haven't. She realizes that the water source is the cause of the illness and goes to investigate, leaving the townspeople to Malaya. At the water source, Castti discovers Veron and Doron, two poison-infected monsters that have polluted the water. She fights them off, then purifies the water with purebalm. Despite the stench that clings to her from the poisoned waters, the townspeople greet Castti warmly, thanking her for saving those who had fallen ill.
Later, Malaya announces she is leaving. As Malaya seems to know something about Eir's Apothecaries, Castti attempts to get Malaya to reveal what she knows. An inquiry triggers a flashback to the time Castti was sent out on the skiff, revealing that the person who put her there was none other than Malaya herself. Before she can ask further, Malaya leaves. Castti then finds a disturbingly bloodstained treatment log in her bag, one she is certain she penned herself. She notes two towns listed in the log: Sai and Winterbloom. She resolves to visit both towns in her search to recover her memories.
If Castti isn't your first choice for your journey, she is found tending a weak, dehydrated sailor. Offer her a Healing Grape and she will join the Party.
Chapter 2: Sai Route[]
Castti is immediately greeted with a cry for help. She asks nearby residents what is going on. They inform her that there is a war between locals and "outsiders" who have been deemed "undesirables". They direct her to the nearby medical tent, where the wounded are tended to. Inside the tent, she encounters Edmund, a rough and unfriendly commander who is overworking his soldiers, including the injured. After Edmund leaves, Castti inquires with Mao, the local apothecary, about her past. This triggers a memory that reveals that she was not merely a member of Eir's Apothecaries: she was their leader.
As Castti ponders on this, she and Mao receive word that there are more wounded who need tending to. Castti rushes to the front lines, where she finds the enemy badly injured. Despite Edmund's protests, she rushes to the aid of the wounded. After a talk with Edmund, Griff, the enemy commander, comes to, and informs Castti that his unit was attacked by a monster. Edmund concludes that the monster may be a Sand Lion. As Castti and Edmund rush to help an injured soldier, the ground shakes, and Edmund and the soldier are swallowed by the sands. Castti pursues them into the monster's den, finding Edmund unharmed with a group of soldiers. Castti goes to confront the Sand Lion herself and emerges victorious.
Upon returning to the hospital, Castti is greeted by Griff, who knows of Eir's Apothecaries' bad reputation. After an inquiry, Castti unlocks more memories: an empty village, purple rain, and confronting a man cloaked in strange attire. Dismayed by these memories, Castti nevertheless resolves to remember them.
Chapter 2: Winterbloom Route[]
Castti is greeted warmly upon her arrival in Winterbloom. Inquiries reveal that she was close to a lady named Rosa, whose manor is located in the northwest section of town. Castti finds Rosa sickly and bedridden, suffering from an incurable illness. Rosa's daughter, Melia, enters the room with herbs for her mother, explaining that she'd grown them herself in the garden Castti established for Rosa, and tasked Melia to tend to. After gathering herbs in the garden, they return to Rosa's room, where they find Greg, Rosa's nephew, having an unpleasant conversation with her. Melia, though quite displeased with his behavior, nonetheless escorts him to the door at his request.
After Castti administers Rosa medicine to soothe her symptoms, Lily arrives and asks to have a word with the apothecary. She presents a ransom note she found, informing them that Melia has been taken and that Castti should come to the tavern in Winterbloom's Thieves' Quarter alone. Upon arriving at the tavern, Castti finds Melia unconscious; but before she can approach further, Greg appears and demands Castti stop treating Rosa and leave Winterbloom, promising that he will send Melia home when she is gone. The hired thieves, however, get impatient with Greg and attack Castti, who defends herself and defeats the thieves. Afterwards, Castti reprimands a remorseful Greg, telling him to look within himself and become a better person. She takes a newly conscious Melia back home.
On the day of Melia's twelfth birthday, Castti witnesses a frail and dying Rosa pass her estate to her daughter. After giving Melia a gift, Rosa succumbs to her illness. Later, during a conversation with Melia in the greenhouse, Melia mentions Trousseau, which triggers another of Castti's memories. Trousseau was a young man who became a member of Eir's Apothecaries after meeting Castti and Malaya in Winterbloom. With her work complete, Castti departs the town.
After visiting Sai and Winterbloom, Malaya appears before Castti before and tells her to go to Healeaks, where Malaya will be waiting.
Crossed Paths, Part 1[]
Castti and Ochette arrive in Cropdale, which Castti notes is famous for its fruit products. Ochette is not impressed--nor is Castti with Ochette's diet. Ochette whines, saying Castti's scolding reminds her of her mother. She then smells something delicious: meat being sold by a vendor. Castti scolds Ochette once more for her manners while buying her a skewer, which Ochette subsequently declares is "gross". The vendor apologizes as the meat is old and hunting has been bad recently. Ochette volunteers to find fresh meat for the vendor. Castti admonishes Ochette not to overexert herself, prompting Ochette to call her "Ma".
The two venture into the forest, where they find a concerning amount of edible fruits. They are then attacked by an agitated duorduor. After a battle, the duorduor retreats further into the forest. Castti and Ochette pursue. Deeper into the woods, they find animals hiding and afraid. These animals warn the two to stay away from the duorduor. The pair continue their pursuit, however, and eventually find the wounded animal. Castti tends to its injuries and names it "Wooly-Ooly". Through Ochette, Wooly-Ooly apologizes for attacking and speaks of an unknown, dark monster that scared the other animals.
Chapter 3[]
Castti finds Healeaks to be completely abandoned. Upon meeting Malaya there, she inquires and unlocks more of her memories: two years ago, Healeaks was the home of Eir’s Apothecaries, a six-person team consisting of Castti, Malaya, brothers Andy and Randy, Elma, and a promising young man named Trousseau. Their success in administering to Healeaks had made them quite popular in town. One day, a young girl named Sally fell mysteriously ill, despite the best efforts of her brother Temm. The team deduced that the cure for her ailment required a santanejo blossom. While the others were wary of the risks, Castti and Trousseau trudged to the top of Mount Liphia to retrieve the blossoms, and with these successfully healed Sally.
Some time later, Castti and her crew returned to Healeaks only to find that Sally and Temm had been found dead near the mountains by the villagers. Trousseau was nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, a mysterious purple rain descended upon the town. One by one, the residents began die despite the apothecaries' best efforts. Castti then noticed a mysterious smokestack coming from Mount Liphia's summit. She, Randy, Andy, and Malaya ascended the peak to investigate, leaving Elma behind.
Upon reaching the peak, the group found Trousseau, who revealed that he killed Sally and Temm in order to lure the townspeople out into the rain. He speaks of a man who "opened [his] eyes" to the belief that life is needless suffering and that death is the ultimate salvation. As the confrontation continued, Castti began to succumb to the poison's effects. Taking advantage of this, Trousseau departed the mountain, but not before revealing that he planned another attack at the coronation in Timberain. Andy and Randy sacrificed their lives to douse the fire in an attempt to stop the poison rain from spreading further. Malaya returned to the village with Castti, discovering that Elma had sacrificed her life to protect the team's horse, Jeyah. Malaya put Castti on Jeyah's back and rode to the docks, where she put Castti in the skiff, believing Castti the only person who could devise a counter-agent to Trousseau's poison.
With her memories finally restored, Castti finally understands the truth behind "Malaya": she is a figment of Castti's own imagination, made to help her remember her past. With her newfound purpose and resolve by her side, Castti sets off for Timberain to stop Trousseau from committing his attack.
Chapter 4[]
Timberain has not yet been struck by the poisoned rain. Castti reunites with Edmund and Griff, who, along with the local soldiers, help usher the citizens to safety, away from the rain that begins to fall. Based on its height and the current of the wind, Castti deduces that Trousseau must be at the roof of Timberain castle, and makes her way there as the rain begins to turn purple.
She finds Trousseau where she suspected he would be and confronts him, emerging victorious. However, Castti begins succumbing to the poison again. Malaya appears once more, advising her that Castti has already found all the ingredients she needed: purebalm that was used to cure the poisoned waters of Canalbrine, scalebark leaf used to ease Rosa's illness in Winterbloom, skybalm that all Eir's Apothecaries had on hand, santanejo blossoms used to treat Sally in Healeaks, and finally, snowdrop petals that were entrusted to her by Malaya. After concocting the medicine, she tests it on herself. It works perfectly.
Castti and Edmund distribute her newfound cure to the townspeople. After an arduous day of treating others, the town is saved. Afterwards, Castti rests in the tavern, where she dreams once more of not just Malaya, but the rest of her fellow apothecaries. They ask to finally be put to rest, to which Castti obliges by giving them skybalm. She then bids her old friends farewell as they finally fade from the world for good, their goals fulfilled and souls finally soothed.
After waking up, Castti walks out with Edmund to the lively aftermath of the coronation ceremony, and is approached by a scrivener, who asks her if she has any sort of message she wanted to share about her selfless actions. She tells the scrivener that she wasn't the one who saved the town, it was Eir's Apothecaries.
Crossed Paths, Part 2[]
Castti and Ochette return to Cropdale and note that the meat vendor that was once near the entrance has gone. They decide to check on Wooly-Ooly. After entering the Animal Trail, they notice something is not right. The forest is cloaked in shadow, and all the animals appear to be missing. While traversing, they discover a shadowy being blocking the trail. As they approach it, Castti is hit with a dizzy spell, forcing Ochette to engage it on her own. After defeating it and forcing it to retreat, they come across "Wooly-Ooly", who is suffering from symptoms that are familiar to Castti: symptoms of those who were afflicted by Trousseau's poison rain. She treats Wooly-Ooly with the cure she has left over. Afterwards, Wooly-Ooly thanks her and tells the two that he used himself as a shield to protect the other animals.
The duo pursue the dark creature deeper into the woods. Suddenly, Castti finds herself separated from Ochette, and haunted by the angry voices of past patients. She soon finds herself in a void, alone with a shadow manifestation (with a familiar voice). The shadow offers her "comfort" from the pain of her failures. Before she can be engulfed in shadow, Ochette appears, having followed Castti's scent. She breaks the hold of the darkness on Castti as the shadow complains of Ochette's light. Together, Castti and Ochette engage the darkness and defeat it, returning the forest to normal.
Relationships[]
Malaya[]
A colleague from Eir's Apothecaries. Malaya respected Castti greatly, believing she, of all the Apothecaries, had the power to save lives. After her death, Malaya became an expression of Castti's suppressed memories, visible only to Castti and guiding Castti on her journey to remember what she had forgotten.
Edmund[]
Edmund is initially hostile to Castti, derisively calling her and other apothecaries "bonemender". He begins to respect her during the incident with the Sand Lion, opening up to her about his past. He is instrumental to her efforts to save Timberain from Trousseau's poison. He still calls her "bonemender", however.
Rosa[]
Castti administered medicine that helped slow the progression of Rosa's terminal illness. The two were close during Eir's Apothecaries' visit to Winterbloom, as Rosa shared her hopes and dreams for her daughter, Melia, with Castti. Rosa trusts Castti and looks back on their time together fondly.
Ochette[]
Castti reminds Ochette of her mother, leading her to view Castti as a maternal figure. She calls Castti "Ma" as a result.
Battle[]
Talent[]
Castti's Talent is Concoct. It allows her to use materials to create compounds during battle, which have effects dependent on the ingredients used By default, Castti is able to use up to 2 ingredients, however she can use BP to add additional ingredients, up to 5 maximum.
Latent Power[]
Castti's Latent Power is Every Drop Counts, which allows her to concoct without consuming any of the ingredients used.

Subjobs[]
Below are the sprites and appearance changes for Castti with each basic Subjob:
Each time a subjob is selected the appearance of the character will also change. The first sprite is the appearance with no Subjob equipped.
Recommended Subjobs[]
- Cleric is the obvious choice to further increase Castti's viability as a backline healer. Besides the obvious boost in flexibility, Castti has the third highest Elemental Defense stat after Temenos, and healing spells scale by that stat, so she'll get a lot of use out of her SP. Finally, it results in the amusing visual presentation of Castti as an axe-wielding nun.
- Dancer is a less obvious choice, but this job's Sealticge's Seduction skill will allow Castti's many single-target skills to become party-wide ones. In addition, the subjob's buffs supplement her own Concoct abilities.
- Merchant expands on Castti's support abilities, not only giving her three more weaknesses to exploit but granting her support abilities which complement Concoct and Castti's other Apothecary skills.
- Scholar takes Castti away from her decent physical damage output, but exchanges it for Fire, Ice and Lightning spells, complementing her Wind, Light and Dark concoctions and making her one of the few characters with the potential to hit all six elements.
- Warrior becomes a viable option once Castti obtains her Ex-Skill, Drastic Measures. Since the ability consumes any debuffs on the the target to deal damage, the idea is to inflict the target with as many debuffs as possible to inflict maximum damage. Warrior's strong PA buff and final Support Skill, Deal More Damage, helps with this by raising the damage cap from 9,999 to 99,999.
- Armsmaster may be Castti's best secondary job, partially because it gives her two valid approaches to combat.
- In the most obvious approach, Castti becomes a tough as nails all-rounder. Though the Apothecary is nominally a backline support character, its high HP and Physical Attack lead to Castti spending a lot more time in melee combat than you might expect, and Armsmaster gives her every weapon type. Her newfound excellence at Breaking foes will also keep her Latent Power topped up, and Inspiriting Break will allow her to keep her SP full as well.
- Second, she can be equipped with Element-boosting weapons the same way Osvald would be. A Castti Concocting Dark damage and augmented with the Eclipse Edge sword, Dark Slasher axe, Abyssal Rod and Break Damage Limit served as main damage carry for Sanjan at the Flame Fatales GDQ charity event in August 2023, routinely one-shotting bosses with 6-digit damage totals.
Due to the flexibilty of subjobs, any character can fill any role with the right equipment and skills, with proper planning, any of the travelers can perform decently on any subjob.

Etymology[]
"Castti" is a Corsican word meaning "chaste," emphasizing Castti's pure spirit. Her name also could be derived from the word "cast," a casing that helps broken bones heal. In addition, "Castti" could be a play on the term "castaway," alluding to the beginning of her story in which she is found stranded on a skiff.
Castti's surname "Florenz" is an Old French name, derived from the Latin word "florentius" (which means "blossoming" or "flourishing"). Her surname therefore symbolizes her association with growth, life, and healing. "Florenz" may also be a tribute to the war nurse Florence Nightingale, who was famous for her work in English hospitals during the Crimean War, as both women are medical practitioners and Castti's clothes are visually similar to those of a war nurse in that time period.
Trivia[]
- At age 29, Castti is the oldest of the female travelers of both games; prior to Octopath Traveler II, this title was held by H'aanit, at age 26.
- In travel banter with Osvald, Castti reveals that she routinely tests new treatments on herself. She has made many errors in the past, even to the point of leaving her on death's door, but over time she has developed immunity to all but the most virulent poisons.
- Castti's Chapter 1 reveals that her name is stitched onto her uniform.
- The bottom of Castti's satchel contains a secret pocket, where she keeps her travel log and treatment record.
- As revealed in her Chapter 3, Castti always used to carry skybalm to refresh her fellow Eir's Apothecaries, who frequently pushed themselves too hard.
- According to travel banter with Temenos, Castti set out to become an apothecary after reading a picture book.
- Castti taught herself how to cook after treating a patient one day, observing that a good diet helps patients heal faster. She is particularly skilled at creating a delicious stew using medicinal herbs.
- According to designer Naoki Ikushima, Castti was the most difficult character to design due to the developers not being able to decide on a color scheme. In Ikushima's opinion, her final color scheme is befitting of a kind character, and it also fits extremely well with her starting location being the ocean.[2]
- According to writer Kakunoshin Futsuzawa, Castti's story was the idea of director Keisuke Miyauchi.[2]
- As revealed by tavern banter, Castti has a tendency to become giggly when drunk.
- During the Journey for the Dawn, Castti reveals that she plans to rebuild Eir's Apothecaries by finding like-minded individuals to join her humanitarian quest.
- Claude describes Castti's eyes as "filled with a motherly strength: deep wells of kindness that belied a sense of fierce determination."
- Castti claims that her heart flutters whenever someone shows her their vulnerable side, which makes her want to protect them.
- In the game's leftover file names, Castti was called "Conifer."
- Yasunori Nishiki composed Castti's theme to express the loss she feels due to amnesia, combined with her gentle personality and kind, maternal nature as an apothecary. Her theme employs a marimba to create a vaguely empty, lonely sound, while the flute melody represents the feminine, supportive side of her character. The melody is meant to conjure up a sense of searching for a place in the world, feeling your way forward, and ruminating on memories again and again.[3]
- Since Castti has the quietest theme of the eight travelers, arranging it for combat in "The Journey for Memories Ends" was inevitably more of a challenge for Yasunori Nishiki. While her character theme strives to express emptiness, he wanted to evoke another side of her character with the battle arrangement: namely, her strength of spirit, manifested in the fact that even when encountering painful memories of the past, she never forgets to keep moving forward.[4]
