- "I've no use for product that avails me no profit. Your flesh and blood are mine, and you will devote it to seeing our guests delighted!" —To his gladiators
Borneau is a character in Octopath Traveler II. He is the owner of the underground arena in Montwise, and appears during Hikari's Chapter 2.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Borneau is a portly man who wears a dark coat and a feathered hat.
Personality[]
Borneau is avaricious, callous, and dismissive of human life, treating battles to the death as entertainment. He promotes betting on bloody arena matches and owns the lives of the gladiators who fall into his clutches due to their debts, insisting that they are worthless to him if they cannot earn him profit. On account of his cruel personality, he is unpopular with the gladiators, and therefore relies heavily on his champion Bandelam to protect him. Without his protector, Borneau's cowardice outweighs his greed.
History[]
Born into a circus troupe, Borneau grew up exposed to all sorts of shows. Realizing that the most violent acts drew the biggest crowds, he decided to invest in arena battles, and eventually became the manager of Montwise's arena, where he led wealthy spectators to gamble on fights to the death.
Story[]
During Hikari's Chapter 2, Kazan promotes Hikari through a series of arena matches, ostensibly to repay his gambling debts to Borneau. With each match, Kazan bets on Hikari's victory, and gains steadily larger and larger wins.
Borneau is first seen threatening his gladiators, insulting their worth and courage as he seeks a match for Hikari. Zeto steps forward, only to lose to the young prince. Rather than killing Zeto, however, Hikari chooses to spare him - a decision that Borneau treats as a slight. Borneau therefore sends Bandelam in to execute Zeto, but Hikari defends Zeto. To appease his angry audience, Borneau arranges the following match as a battle between Hikari and Bandelam.
During the championship battle, a number of gladiators storm Borneau's balcony and threaten their boss. Kazan reveals that they were in his employ, and Borneau is helpless while Hikari keeps Bandelam occupied. After Bandelam's defeat, the gladiators corral Borneau into the area, where they plan to kill him. Once again, however, Hikari steps in to advocate for mercy. Borneau escapes with his life, giving his arena and its gladiators over to Kazan in order to fulfill Kazan's winning bet.
After losing his position in Montwise, Borneau sails to the western continent, where he plans to earn his next big fortune by establishing an arena for monster fights.
