- "Passion is important in our line of work, but there’s a fine line between that and obsession. And Orlick’s crossed that line." —Barham
Barham is a character in Octopath Traveler. He is an ex-research partner of Orlick who went his separate way after the latter became obsessed with the ruby dragonstone.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Barham wears a white robe with a red-brown mantle, and has brown hair.
Personality[]
Barham is a taciturn, somewhat secretive man, who has been embittered by Orlick's obsession but still cares for his former partner at heart. Barham initially comes across as quite suspicious, requiring Therion to bring him a number of research components without specifying why he needs them. In the end, however, he reveals his good intentions to create a replica key for Orlick's Manse, helping Therion acquire the dragonstone so that Orlick may be freed from its grasp and restored to his sanity.
A man of precision, Barham is respected by his peers for his methodological approach - though some take issue with other respects of his character.
Story[]
In the past, Barham worked alongside Orlick as his research partner. When Orlick obtained the ruby dragonstone, he began reclusive and obsessed with studying it, which led Barham to warn him against the dragonstone for his own safety. Orlick sent Barham away, however, and Barham proceeded to work alone in a dilapidated house on the edge of Noblecourt.
During his Chapter 2, Therion comes to Noblecourt in search of the ruby dragonstone. After hearing rumors of Orlick's research and his former research partner, Therion approaches Barham in his home, hoping to enlist his help to retrieve the ruby dragonstone for Cordelia Ravus. Barham agrees to assist Therion, but only if Therion will deliver him three rare research materials: oasis water, a wyvern scale, and crystal ore.
After Therion gives him the requisite materials, Barham combines them to create a key to Orlick's laboratory. He then tells Therion the password to get past Orlick's guards, "the truth of all things."
Once Orlick has been freed from the grasp of the ruby dragonstone, he and Barham mend fences, continuing their work as research partners.
