- "The order and authority present in this world. All things that are deemed righteous. It's all a big strikin' lie, wouldn't you agree? You're not great because you're in the right. You're great because nobody's strong enough to oppose you! That's what I wanna see! I wanna see the righteous weep and beg for their lives!" —Avar's philosophy
Avar Clevestein is a character in Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent: Side Solistia. He is the one of main antagonist of The Chosen One story, being a member of the Order of Blood.

Story[]
Born in the House of Clevestein, a noble family. At some point, he killed all his relatives, including the grandfather he often cites, abandoning his noble life to experience the thrill of conflict.
Known as the "Eternal Rebel" by Lucian, he used to antagonize the Order of Blood until he decided to join it, likely enthralled by the idea of gaining more power. Avar was the first one in surviving a more intense version of the Baptism of Blood, granting him the power he craved.
Avar is present at Ignazio's baptism, who is the second one surviving the intense baptism. When the Greedy makes it clear to Lucian he wouldn't obey his orders, but will follow the Great Will, Avar asks Lucian if he is fine with this development, to which the Glorious replies those who bear the blood of the gods are guided by the Great Will to the same destination. Lucian talks about Avar's purpose being different from the rest, but he was accepted as a member for being the first one in survive the baptism. The Conqueror, suggesting he can use the power Lucian granted him against him, tells him his wish of having a rebellious "brother" with whom he can measure his strength. Lucian would ask if he plans to sever the blood oath through parricide, which the Conqueror neither denies nor confirms.
The Chosen One[]
Avar appears in New Delsta when Sail awakens his powers. As the young man tries to resist the dark power, Avar attacks him, urging him to give in and use the ring he has. Sail unwittingly ends up summoning Aelfric's Chosen One, which surprises the Conqueror, who had no idea such a thing was possible. However, he doesn't plan to stop and confronts both Chosen Ones. Despite being superior in strength, Avar is satisfied to see him oppose him, so he considers him a "Rebel". Introducing himself to the travelers, he warns they will meet again before leaving.
After Ignazio's defeat at Canalbrine, he and Lucian are seen discussing the progress of their Chosen One and how they should prepare to receive him as the Vessel of the Great Will.
When Jafford, defeated by Sail, was about to tell him about Noma, Avar appears, telling him not to spoil the fun. He points out his imprudence of summoning an Ouma of Blood, using the Ouma Logs without Lucian's permission. When Bishop admits he cannot entrust the Order's ideals to the leader, Avar fatally wounds him. Seeing Sail, who witnessed everything, he explains he was only carrying out a purge. He also informs him his mother is alive, and if he wants to know more about the Order's goal, he should visit Ryu. He then leaves, along with Jafford's corpse and the five Ouma Logs he had with him, to deliver them to Lucian.
Avar has a final meeting with the Glorious where they discuss their next move. With seven of the eight Ouma Logs in their possession and Sail fated to find the remaining Log, the advent of the "Twin Gods" is imminent. Lucian asks him if he'll turn against the Order after the divine descent, to which Avar replies that would be after witnessing the Lucian's idea of salvation before leaving the temple.
Avar would later find and murder Gabriel, a former member of the Order who held the remaining Ouma Log. Sail and Mydia had followed Gabriel to the Animal Trail in the Leaflands, only to find a bloody scene. Sail demands him to hand over the Log, with Avar responding he knows he will have to fight for it, but also admits it would be boring if Lucian were to obtain the last Log so easily. This surprises Sail, as he is unable to understand Avar's goals and what he gains with all of this. After expressing his opinions about order and authority, Avar attacks Sail, urging him to fight to the bitter end.
After being defeated, Avar remarks how strong Sail is, so he can't wait to see him face Lucian. Avar leaves with the Log, but not before telling him they'll see each other at the end of his fate.
Avar would hand the remaining Log to Lucian, so the Codex of Ouma would be whole again.
He would appear in the Ashen Ridge in the Wildlands, praising Sail for defeating Lucian. Sail, annoyed to see him there, asks what he's planning. Avar insists they're like old friends, so he doesn't need to go easy on him. The young man insists they have no reason to fight, but Avar claims there shouldn't be a good reason for a fight in the first place. Since Sail defeated the Glorious One, the Conqueror wants to fight Sail to test his own strength, transforming himself into a monstrosity. Despite using the power of the "blood of Gods," the eternal rebel ends being defeated a second time.
Avar asks him why he continues to fight; if it's because he was "chosen" to do so. Sail replies his own past doesn't negate the present, so he'll follow his own path, regardless of the cruel truth awaiting him at the end of the journey. He also tells him to stop interfering with him before leaving, leaving Avar still in awe of how strong the Chosen One has become.
When Lucian summons Ouma in Holden and encases Sail in a cocoon atop a gigantic tower of flesh and blood, Avar appears at the front of the cocoon, attacking it and forcing Sail the Fallen to emerge prematurely. The two clash, but Sail overwhelms Avar in an instant. By the time the Chosen One and Mydia reach the upper floors, Avar was already wounded, but attempts to attack the vessel once more, only to get a fatally countered. Seconds later, Avar perishes while trying to say something to Sail.

Trivia[]
- It's possible Avar believed the lie about "severing the blood pact through parricide", which could explain why, despite his suggestive comments, the Conqueror never seemed to attempt anything against the Glorious.
