- "Fantastic! Sometimes soft, sometimes strong, the sweet sounds of sultry strings soothed my soul." —Listening to the Violinist
Audley is a character in Octopath Traveler II. He is a merchant living in Winterbloom and serves as a key figure in Partitio's Scent of Commerce quest.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Audley wears a blue merchant's outfit, complete with a feathered hat. He wields a bow in battle.
Personality[]
Audley is enthusiastic and eloquent, fond of collecting oddities, though he often struggles to find buyers for his wares. He is delighted by Partitio's innovative mindset, outpouring his gratitude with eager alliteration.
Story[]
While strolling through Winterbloom, Partitio overhears a cry for help. He rushes into the building where the voice is coming from, only to find it empty. After a bewildered search he eventually realizes that the sound is emanating from a strange device in the room, looping repeatedly.
Audley enters the house, confirming that what Partitio is hearing is indeed coming from the machine, which he calls a "phonographic articulator." Audley confesses he's had trouble marketing and selling the device, as potential buyers view paper as a more convenient and cheaper recording medium. Partitio suggests that the device be used to record music, filling it with gems of sound. He heads out in search of three musicians to perform for the device: a pianist from Flamechurch, a violinist from Canalbrine, and a guitarist from Crackridge (each playing a variation of "Cait's Theme").
Delighted by the music, Audley thanks Partitio and proposes that he should sell the recording device to wealthy customers. Partitio suggests he sell it to taverns instead, creating a public sensation which would later incentivize individuals to buy the device. He envisions a world in which every household has its own music player. Audely finds inspiration in this vision and invites Partitio to name the device. Partitio settles on "gramophone."
Once Audley's quest is complete, gramophones will appear in every tavern throughout the game. Players can purchase music records from shops and NPCs scattered throughout various towns, listening to up to 30 pieces from the game's soundtrack.

Etymology[]
"Audley" is a name of Old English and Anglo-Saxon origin, serving as a habitational surname to someone born in that namesake village in Staffordshire. In this context, "Audley" means “from the old meadow." In addition, Audley's name plays on the terms "audio" and "audible," alluding to his relationship with sound in the form of the gramophone.
Trivia[]
- In-game, the gramophone's musical feature has a few idiosyncratic quirks:
- If a record is playing when the player chooses to change their party, the music will stop when the player exits out of the party selection menu. The town's regular music will resume playing instead.
- If the player enters a battle while the gramophone's music is playing (i.e., Challenging, Provoking, Coercing, or Mugging an NPC within the tavern), the track that the gramophone is playing will be set as the town's regular music. This causes the gramophone's music to resume playing after the battle, even if the player leaves the tavern. In this way players can roam towns while listening to any of the gramophone's musical tracks. Changing the gramophone's music in this situation will change the music as normal, allowing the player to switch themes while exploring a town, while turning off the gramophone will result in silence. The town's regular music can be reset by exiting out of the party selection menu as detailed above.
