Alpione, also known as the Guardian of the Waves, is a character in Octopath Traveler II and a mini-boss in Ochette's Chapter 2: Cateracta's Route story.

Appearance[]
Alpione has short brown hair which is held up with a blue headband. Her eyes are slate grey, and she has brown skin. She wears black shorts underneath a greyish-blue dress, which is tied with a teal sash. For footwear Alpione wears brown sandals.
Personality[]
Alpione acts as a defender of the natural world. She is fiercely protective of Cateracta's remains, having fought to defend the guardian from hunters. Cateracta's death and the looting of the guardian's body parts by rapacious humans left Alpione embittered toward humankind. Because she believes that humans are tainted by greed, she shuns them and wards off any intruders who seek to visit Cateracta's island. Despite her pessimistic manner, Alpione warms up to Ochette when she witnesses the young hunter's selfless optimism, overcoming her mistrust in order to grant Ochette access to Cateracta's final gift.

Alpione is a descendant of the guardians who protected the sea god Cateracta for generations. Her family roots stretch back thousands of years to Toto'haha, as her ancestors were beastlings who left the island with Cateracta. Therefore, traces of beastling blood run in Alpione's veins.
Story[]
In her early life, Alpione was part of a group that helped defend Cateracta after the sea god was weakened from saving Conning Creek from a giant wave. However, the group was attacked, with most of the members being killed by a group led by the Dark Hunter. The hunter slew Cataracta and defeated Alpione's group, leaving Alpione as the sole survivor of the attack. Before her death, Cateracta left a single egg in the Cavern of the Sea God outside of Conning Creek, where Alpione would watch over and protect it for some time.
One day, Alpione is confronted by Ochette, who is looking for Cataracta to bring her back to Toto'haha. Refusing to believe her, Alpione barrs the path to the island, but Ochette refuses to stand down and provokes her. Despite putting up a fight, Alpione is no match for the young hunter and ends up getting knocked out.
After recovering shortly after, she makes her way to the island and confronts Ochette, who had just discovered Cataracta's remains outside of the cave, telling her there is nothing left of the former beast of legend. When Ochette tells her of her true purpose for finding Cataracta, Alpione relents and asks her to meet her inside the Cavern of the Sea God. They share a meal together before Alpione shows her the egg Cataracta left behind. She witnesses Ochette hatch the egg and name the baby Acta, then sees her off, finally able to lay down her burden.
Alpione's Next Chapter[]
Some time after being relieved of her duties, Alpione makes her way to Gravell during her travels where, despite the quiet nature, she finds herself bored. She has a lot of time on her hands and is looking for any type of work. She hears of a job request from a merchant outside of town and goes to investigate it. In the process, she finds the monster they were looking for, but chases off all of the merchants that were after it. Alpione calms and befriends the monster, and they both set off on a new journey together with the purpose of finding and helping similar mistreated animals in the world.

- Alpione has an acute sense of smell, as she can detect Ochette's "beastly" scent. This is likely because her ancestors were Beastlings.
- The monster that Alpione befriends is an Armor Eater, which she claims reminded her of Cateracta.
- During the Epilogue, Zeto can be seen complimenting Alpione on her "beautiful muscles."
- Alpione's weaknesses foreshadow Akalā's and Mahina's max boost skill types (unlocked in Ochette's Ch. 3): Azure Fang and Claw, and Azure Wind, Light, and Darkness respectively.
- Alpione's Dance Session ability is Warding Minuet.
- After her sidequest is complete, Alpione can be found at the eastern edge of Beasting Bay: Anchorage during the day and by the beach at night, alongside her befriended Armor Eater. If she is recruited, her Armor Eater will disappear from the map.
