- "I can see a flame burning within you... Yes... It burns within both of you. It seems the time has come for me to fulfill my mission." —To Throné and Temenos
Alpates is a character in Octopath Traveler II. She is a member of the Lumina Clan, and she appears during the Crossed Path episodes of the Cleric and Thief.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Alpates has brown hair and wears a dark robe.
Personality[]
Having grown up in seclusion, Alpates is fragile and largely ignorant of the outside world. She is devoted to fulfilling her "mission," seeking out the gods' chosen heroes and entrusting them with her mirror fragment. She appears to be a trusting judge of character, as she gifts her sacred mirror to Throné and Temenos when she first meets them, but she is willing to endure capture and death before yielding information to her enemies.
History[]
According to the Order of the Sacred Flame's scripture, Aelfric once left someone in the world to consort with humankind. Her name was Alpates, and she became the mother of a clan who shared the blood of Aelfric. This clan later became known as the Lumina Clan.
After her death, Alpates's children were overcome with despair. Aelfric therefore crafted a single mirror from her body, and its warm light relieved her clan of their grief.
The Alpates who appears during the events of Octopath Traveler II is a descendant of the original Alpates, imbued with the blood of the gods. She spent her whole life raised in a secret room above the Flamechurch: Cathedral, sheltered in secret by Pontiff Jörg.
Story[]
During their first Crossed Path episode, Temenos and Throné visit Flamechurch in search of a mysterious treasure known as "Alpates," which was said to be left by the gods and hidden in the cathedral. The two locate a hidden passage in the pontiff's room, leading to an upper room containing a woman.
This woman introduces herself as Alpates, who lived her whole life in this secret chamber. After discerning that a pure flame burns in Throné's and Temenos's hearts, she entrusts them with a fragment of a cloudy mirror, then departs the cathedral to fulfill her mission by rejoining her clan.
During their second Crossed Path episode, however, Temenos and Throné discover Alpates murdered in Conning Creek: Harbor. The pair slips inside the shack where Alpates's body is being kept, and Throné discovers a scrap of parchment hidden in an oddly stitched portion of Alpates's clothes. Temenos notes that as Alpates was bound hand and foot but left free to speak, she was likely interrogated and killed when she refused to talk.
Alpates's hidden note mentions the Cavern of the Moon and Sun and contains the clue "where day meets night." Following these cryptic instructions, Throné and Temenos explore the cavern and discover a secret treasure that Alpates left behind. This treasure turns out to be a second mirror fragment, which perfectly aligns with the first to create a cloudy mirror. Temenos recalls the legend of Alpates's clan, and he and Throné resolve to fulfill Alpates's mission in her honor.
During the Journey for the Dawn, the eight travelers employ Alpates's mirror to rekindle Solistia's four Sacred Flames, enabling them to ward off the Shadow as it smothers the world.
