- "Alephan, Lord of Learning!" —Cyrus using Alephan's Enlightenment
Alephan is a recurrent character in the Octopath Traveler series. He is the 1st of the 13 gods of Orsterra and one of the eight patron gods of Solistia.
Story[]
Approximately 1,600 years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, Galdera attempted to seize the power of the gods for himself. The battle that ensued was concluded when Aelfric brought the Sacred Flame from the heavens and sealed Galdera away in the afterworld.
Champions of the Continent[]
Long before the events of Champions of the Continent and Octopath Traveler, Finis turned Alephan into the Ring of the Scholarking and bestowed it upon the people. This ring ended up in King Pardis III's hands through Tatloch (through her proxy), who became his bearer.
Octopath Traveler[]
Alephan will bestow the Scholar job to the player at the Shrine of the Sage.
Octopath Traveler II[]
Alephan appears among the eight gods who sacrificed themselves to defeat the wicked god Vide, after which time the gods fell into a deep slumber. He is enshrined at the Altar of the Scholarking.

Etymology[]
In Old English, "ālēfan" means "to allow" or "to grant," highlighting Alephan's role in granting knowledge and wisdom. "Aleph" is also the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet; it means "leader" or refers to the origin of the universe, therefore symbolizing Alephan's preeminent status as the firstborn of the gods.
In the Japanese version, his title, 碩学王, is composed by the kanjis of 碩 (great), 学 (scholar, study, knowledge) and 王 (monarch, king, sovereign).
Trivia[]
- In Octopath Traveler II, Alephan serves as the patron deity of the court systems.
- Alephan speaks briefly during the opening sequence in Temenos's Chapter 1, where he appears shrouded in an indistinct white robe.
- Alephan presides over the sun and wisdom. He is the oldest of the gods of Orsterra, represented as a scholar with a book in his hand, and his crest is modeled after a tome.[1]
- In the "Memories of Fortune" TRPG in the Octopath Traveler: Complete Guide, the sun is referred to as "the incarnation of Alephan, the Scholarking," suggesting that his presiding over the sun may be taken literally.[2]
- The "Sagelord's Duet" Dance Session ability in Octopath Traveler II may be a tribute to Alephan, the Sage.
- Likewise, the Great Sage's Staff may be named after him.
