- "Grrrrrr… I am… strong." —Akalā, before Ochette chooses her companion
Akalā is a character in Octopath Traveler II. He is a lājackal, described as radiant in the sun's grace, with formidable fangs that tear the flesh of his prey. If Ochette selects him as her companion, he serves as both a younger and older brother to her along her journey.
If Ochette chooses Mahina to be her companion, instead, however, a corrupted version of Akalā will be the final boss of her story.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Akalā is an orange-brown jackal with yellow eyes and white sun marking on his back. He wears a pair of blue bracers around his forelegs.
Personality[]
Akalā is often one to keep calm and collected. If Ochette starts becoming too impatient or impulsive, he helps to remind her of her responsibilities. According to Ochette, he is as honest as they come, and he serves as a steadfast and loyal friend who plays the straight man to Ochette’s wise girl. Ochette acknowledges that he is the brains of his pair, though she scolds him for his mistrust and hostility toward humans. He does not enjoy petting by strangers, claiming that as long as he has Ochette, he needs no other friends.
Battle[]
Similar to Ochette, Akalā is a physical attacker. He deals more damage than Mahina, in exchange for giving Ochette less coverage. He will always attack a foe's physical weakness, but the foe and weakness is chosen at random e.g. if fighting a Lloris and Shambling Weed, he will either target the former with either a , or attack, or the latter with a , or attack.
During the battle against the Darkling of the Sorrowful Moon, and when Ochette is fully boosted after completing her story, Akalā will unleash a or attack on all foes three times, and will always use an attack that at least one foe is weak to, in addition to taking on an larger, “Awakened” appearance.

Story[]
(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment...) The following section contains potential story spoilers! |
Juvah and Ochette arrive at the Tombs of the Wardenbeasts ten years before the start of the main story, where Akalā the lājackal and Mahina the malamaowl are waiting. Here, Juvah allows Ochette to pick an animal companion to hunt with, but Juvah tells her she can only choose one. Should the player pick Mahina, Akalā will be shrouded in darkness and go berserk, attacking Ochette before taking his leave, but if the player picks Akalā, the inverse happens.
If chosen as Ochette's companion, Akalā will accompany Ochette during all of her story chapters, including her Crossed Path chapters with Castti.
Ten years after Ochette chooses him as her companion, Akalā and Ochette chase after a gluttonous lizard called the King Iguana, as it had begun eating far more than it should have and was threatening the natural order. Ochette and Akalā eventually catch up to the creature and capture it, and as tempting as it is to Ochette to eat it, Akalā reminds her that the King Iguana's meat was for the people of Beasting Village, not her exclusively.
Akalā then accompanies Ochette on her quest to gather the three Creatures of Legend: Cateracta, Tera, and Glacis.
During the Night of the Scarlet Moon, Akalā and Ochette plunge together into the ocean, where Akalā receives the power of the First Flame. With its power, Akalā helps Ochette defeat the Darkling of the Sorrowful Moon and save Toto'haha from the calamity.

Etymology[]
"Akalā" may be inspired by the Hawaiian word "Ākala," which refers to a species of endemic raspberry shrubs found in Hawai'i, also used in reference to the color pink. Some sources claim the word's meaning is "morning sun," which reinforces Akalā's sun imagery.
"Lā" doubles as the Hawaiian word for "sun" or "day," which means that Akalā’s species, the lājackal, translated to "sun jackal." This meaning, alongside Mahina's analogical naming convention relating to the moon, further strengthens the day/night duality represented by Ochette's two companions.
Trivia[]
- Despite having a strong sense of smell, Akalā claims that Ochette's nose is more powerful than his.
- Although he denies it, Ochette observes that Akalā appears to enjoy frolicking in snow.
- When summoned at maximum boost in his Azure form, Akalā's sprite changes to resemble a healthy version of the Lājackal of the Sorrowful Moon, with a strip of blue fur along the base of his tail.
