Octopath Traveler II Champions of the Continent
"Mama was a star. She wrote her own songs and traveled the land, singing and dancing. Papa was a tailor. They met when he was making Mama's dresses. Mama wore them as she sang her heart out for the world to hear. Of course, Pala and I went everywhere with her. But those happy days were short-lived. Mama was so focused on making people smile that she never noticed how ill she was until it was too late. After some time, Mama went on one final journey, this time to a place we couldn't follow. Ever since then, Papa's opposed my dream. My dream of following in Mama's footsteps…" —Agnea, recounting the events surrounding her mother's death

Agnea Bristarni is one of eight playable characters in Octopath Traveler II. She is a dreamy dancer who wants to follow the footsteps of her late mother, Cuani Bristarni, to travel the world and achieve stardom.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Agnea's hair is brown and braided. She wears two silver hoop earrings and a black headband with a rose on the left side. Her dress is re-tailored from her mother’s and has white shoulder straps, a black bodice with orange threads, and a long orange skirt with a darker hem. Around her waist, she has a cyan sash with tassels. She wears black medium-heeled pumps that sometimes cause her to stumble.

Personality[]

She is a cheerful and optimistic woman who has big dreams of becoming a star like her mother. She knows what's right as she is compassionate to all those in need of help or hope, and, true to her goals, she is often a source of inspiration to those who have fallen into despair. She is also quite clumsy, tripping over herself on multiple occasions. In order to fit her image of a star, she suppresses her native accent in favor of something more "city" like.

History[]

Your name is Agnea Bristarni, and you are a dancer. Your tale begins in the verdant region of the Leaflands.

Though a tavern dancer in a small village, you have big dreams for the future.

“I’m going to become a star and bring smiles to people's faces. Just like Mama.”

With hope in your heart and a spring in your step, you begin your journey to stardom...

Prior to Story[]

Agnea is the daughter of Cuani, a famous dancer and singer. Cuani died from an illness brought from overworking herself. Before she died, Cuani gave Agnea her hairpin as good luck charm. Agnea was inspired to become a dancer because of her mother. Agnea's father, Garud, fearing that Agnea would end up dying like her mother, refused to let her follow her dream unless she earned 10,000 leaves. This spurred Agnea to work at a local tavern as a dancer.

Story[]

Chapter 1[]

One night after a performance, Agnea is generously tipped by the patrons. She receives the remaining money she needs from her employer and childhood friend Gus. Agnea returns home to tell the news to her sister Pala and their father, much to his dismay.

The next morning, Agnea sets out to the festival grounds and helps with preparations by recruiting additional help; but Gus arrives and tells Agnea that Pala hasn't returned from getting raspberries in the forest and that he saw the hoofprints of a monstrous boar called the Duorduor. Agnea and Gus set out to the forest to find Pala, only to come across the hungry Duordour. Agnea and Gus keep the monster from reaching the town, dirtying and tearing Agnea's dress in the process. Pala then arrives and apologizes for her delay in getting the berries. After returning to town with Gus and Pala, Agnea is approached by Garud, who presents her with Cuani's re-tailored dress to wear for the festival. Soon after, she puts on a stunning performance while singing her mother's old songs, with the festival continuing through the night.

The following morning, Agnea bids farewell to her family and the townspeople before setting off on her journey to be a star with the promise to bring smiles to the world with a song of her making.

If you did not start with Agnea, she is encountered in Cropdale after finding her purse. Pala asks you to take the flustered Agnea with you. Accept the offer and Agnea will join the party.

Chapter 2[]

Agnea arrives in New Delsta, where she learns of the star Dolcinaea Luciel. She attempts to watch Dolcinaea's performance at the New Delsta Theatre but is turned away due to having no ticket. She is able to entreat a ticket, allowing her to watch Dolcinaea's performance. Awed by what she sees, she loses herself in song and dance outside the theater, grabbing the attention of a man named Gil. Gil takes her to his run-down tavern and discusses dreams with her. She volunteers to dance at his tavern, alluring city people there to watch her performance. Despite his claims that he's not a talented musician, Gil accompanies her on the piano.

The newfound success of Gil's tavern is not to be, however. Ruffians in the employ of the New Delsta Theatre have learned of this upstart business. When Agnea next visits Gil's tavern, the place is smashed, the piano broken, and Gil hopeless again. Furious, Agnea stomps over to the theatre, pushes her way backstage, and confronts La'mani, the theatre manager. After some aggressive negotiations, she gets him to agree to compensate Gil for the damages. However, Dolcineaea, watching from the wings, demands La'mani leave Gil's tavern alone.

Before she leaves, Gil gives Agnea a song he wrote for her. It has no lyrics at present (and Agnea -- and indeed other characters -- can be heard trying to provide some during Banter interactions as the game continues), but he has named it Song of Hope.

Crossed Paths, Part 1[]

Agnea and Hikari arrive in Ryu, where they hear a very soothing tone that Hikari recognizes as a lute. They then approach the source: a traveling musician named Yomi. At Agnea's urging, Hikari pays to hear another song from her, but she asks them to come back the following night after she has made preparations. The next night, they again encounter Yomi, who is now wearing a new kimono. However, she informs them that her lute was damaged and she needs a horse's hair to repair it. After Agnea entreats a nearby merchant for the material needed, Yomi asks them to come back the following night. Finally, on the next night, they meet Yomi on a nearby hill, where she plays "By the Light of the Heart", a song that Hikari recognizes from his late friend, Tsuki.

Chapter 3[]

Agnea arrives in Tropu'hopu, where she finds a theatre troupe, run by a woman named Giselle, attempting to set up on the town's famous floating stage. Alas, the troupe's cart has broken down, and Giselle is losing hope. Agnea helps them fix their cart and brings hope to Giselle when she runs away to a secluded island. Afterward, the troupe invites her to perform at the Grand Gala.

This chapter does not feature a dungeon or a boss fight.

Chapter 4[]

Agnea arrives in Sai and finds it devoid of hope. A girl named Laila in particular has been causing mischief in the town, defacing the statue of a dancer who seems familiar to Agnea. After a failed attempt at cheering up the town with a dance, Agnea is approached by an elderly couple who invite Agnea to rest at their house. There she learns that the couple runs an orphanage that Laila is part of. They speak of a dancer who visited the town twenty years ago: Cuani, Agnea's mother--confirming that the statue Laila defaced is of her. They also mention another orphan once in their care who Cuani taught how to dance, and who has since become famous for her dancing.

Just then, Veronica, Dolcinaea's bodyguard, interrupts and threatens the couple to leave--something she has already advised them to do. Laila scares Veronica off, but not before Veronica warns them that there will be "no mercy" next time. Laila runs away afterwards, causing the elderly couple to share Laila's tragic story. Agnea pursues Laila, catching her dancing in front of Cuani's statue. She notices that Laila's shoes are worn and entreats a new pair. Afterward, she teaches Laila how to dance. Watching this, the elderly woman reflects on a similar scene twenty years ago, with one of her charges and Cuani. That charge is revealed in a flashback to be Dolcinaea.

All is interrupted when more hired thugs menace the town. They are in the employ of Dolcinaea, who owns the deed to the entire slum. Telling Laila to protect the children, Agnea goes up the hill overlooking town to confront Dolcinaea. Dolcinaea reveals her plans to raze the town and turn it into "Dolcinaealand", as she claims that no star could have come from Sai as it is. Agnea continues to refute Dolcinaea, spurring Veronica to attack. When Veronica loses, Dolcinaea extends an invitation to the Festival of Grace, a dance festival where the two will finally square off.

Chapter 5[]

Agnea arrives at Merry Hills, where the Grand Gala will take place. She is noticed by a small group of performers who have heard of Dolcinaea's recognition of her. Not all of the attention is positive, however: she is also accosted by two ruffians who try to kidnap her. Defeated, the two men report to their employer, who demands they return with Agnea.

Having fended off her would-be kidnappers, Agnea proceeds through the crowd, where she's reunited with Giselle's Traveling Troupe. They agree to escort Agnea to the stage. As they make their way to the stage, the two ruffians appear once again. Some quick thinking by Tanzy creates a diversion that allows Agnea to escape. Even so, she finds she is still being pursued as she nears the stage. A surprise reunion with Gil provides yet another distraction for the ruffians: Gil begins to play the piano, and is soon accompanied by Laila, who dances to Gil's music.

Agnea finally nears the Stage of the Moon and Sun; but she faces one final diversion. The mastermind behind the attempted kidnappings unveils himself--a man Agnea does not recognize, but who seems familiar with her. The man is La'mani, the embittered theater manager from New Delsta. Just as he is about to accost Agnea, Veronica appears and knocks him out, urging Agnea to join Dolcinaea onstage.

Even with the presence of a second dancer on the stage, the audience calls for Dolcinaea alone, shaking Agnea's confidence. A confident Dolcinaea challenges Agnea to see who the "real star" is. Agnea is awed by the battle and nearly loses hope as Dolcinaea taunts her to the sound of the audience still cheering for her alone; but she is buoyed by people calling her name--not just Giselle's Troupe, Gil, and Laila, but Gus, her father, and her sister as well. Encouraged by her friends and family, Agnea gets back on her feet and debuts Song of Hope, cuing another round of battle against Dolcinaea. The two perform to exhaustion. Regardless, Agnea attempts to get back on her feet, leaving Dolcinaea in awe. Dolcinaea concedes defeat and calls Agnea a true star.

As the two dancers retreat, the audience calls for an encore. Agnea invites Dolcinaea back to the stage, but Dolcinaea says the encore is "[Agnea's] time to shine". As Agnea's friends and family rush to congratulate her, she is once more approached by La'mani, who reluctantly admits he has become Agnea's fan. At Laila's urging, Agnea returns to the stage to an enraptured audience.

Crossed Paths, Part 2[]

Agnea and Hikari visit Ku after its liberation from Mugen's rule. Agnea expresses curiosity about the paper lanterns, which Hikari explains are meant to resemble the human soul. They are then approached by Benkei, who suggests they hold a festival in honor of their victory. Hikari rejects the idea, feeling it is too soon to celebrate after so much was lost. Agnea suggests holding a festival to to honor the departed. Both Hikari and Benkei approve. Benkei asks if Agnea would like to dance at the festival, to which Agnea says "it would be an honor".

Agnea helps Hikari find the items listed by Benkei; however, preparations are not done, as Hikari points out that a musician is needed to accompany Agnea. Going off a rumor that Benkei had heard about lute music being played at the Tranquil Grotto, the duo go to investigate. There, they find Yomi reminiscing about her late sister, who is revealed to be Tsuki. Yomi challenges and loses to Hikari, convincing her of her sister's happiness serving him. She is invited to perform at the festival, where she performs "By the Light of the Heart", accompanied by Agnea's dancing.

Relationships[]

Cuani[]

Agnea looked up to her mother and aspired to be like her, with Cuani encouraging Agnea's ambitions. She gave Agnea her headband as a good luck charm.

Garud[]

Despite his gruff exterior, Garud is secretly supportive of his daughter's ambitions, but fears she may come to harm through overwork like her mother; thus he demands she raise 10,000 leaves before she sets off. When that goal is met, he presents her with a re-tailored version of Cuani's dress as a way of giving his blessing. Pala accuses him of being the loudest among those in the audience of the Grand Gala in support of Agnea.

Pala[]

Agnea's little sister is in no way intimidated by her, at times stepping in as the reasonable party and speaking on behalf of her older sister. Nonetheless she relies on Agnea for cooking and found her diet lacking after Agnea set off on her journey.

Gus[]

Gus is Agnea's employer and friend. He supports her dream and even supplies her the last stretch of money needed for her to meet her goal of 10,000 leaves. Though he has a nervous disposition in the face of danger, he trusts Agnea enough to follow her into it.

Gil[]

A man Agnea encounters in New Delsta, who is enthralled by her dancing. He encourages her dreams by allowing her to dance at his tavern, eventually presenting her with a score he composed, titled Song of Hope. He later assists her attempt to flee would-be kidnappers by distracting a crowd with his piano playing. He often refers to Agnea's moves as "hot".

Laila[]

Initially hostile to Agnea, even calling her "old lady", Laila warms up to the older girl when she teaches Laila how to dance. Laila then becomes fiercely defensive of Agnea, even helping Gil distract the audience when Agnea is being pursued by kidnappers.

Latent Power[]

Latent Power is an exclusive unique move for each character in Octopath Traveler II that can only be unlocked by defeating a tough opponent at the end of Chapter 1. It has a gauge that charges when they take damage or break enemies.

All Together Now: Spread single target skills to all targets. This does not affect divine skills or self-usage skills. (In the previous installment, it's this version of Sealticge's Seduction)

Talent[]

Agnea's Talent is Dance Session. If she has allured a townsperson with her Day Path action, they will grant an additional effect when Agnea uses Lion Dance, Peacock Strut or Dagger Dance. In the first two cases, they will provide the benefit to the targeted party member (or a random party member if the effect is spread). In the latter, they will target Agnea instead.

This does not require the townsperson to be summoned into battle and can be used infinitely until they leave through normal means. Each recruitable person provides one specific effect, which is listed below their normal signature move when viewing them through her Path actions.

Subjobs[]

Below are the sprites and appearance changes for Agnea with each basic Subjob:

Each time a subjob is selected the appearance of the character will also change. The first sprite is the appearance with no Subjob equipped.

Recommended Subjobs[]

  • Merchant turns Agnea into the best JP and money farmer in the game. The subjobs is normally limited by its farming skills being single-target, but she can make them party-wide with her main job's Divine Skill, Sealticge's Seduction and her Latent Power, All Together Now; which can be spammed using the Merchant's Full Power support skill to refill her Latent Power at start of combat.
  • Scholar gives Agnea a wide array of elemental coverages, Fire, Ice, and Lightning, which is supplemented by her natively having Wind magic. This subjob additionally comes with a wide variety of buffs, turning Agnea into an even more potent support character, capable of taking even greater advantage of The Show Goes On and Invigorate And Inspire.
  • Cleric can be a good choice for similar reasons as scholar, though this subjob heavily restricts her offensive flexibility.
  • Thief can take advantage of Agnea having the highest base speed in the game, turning her from support-character into a damage-dealer. Aeber's Reckoning deals damage based on the user's Speed and the Incidental Attack support skill can be attached to any Agnea build for a bit of extra damage.
  • Apothecary & Inventor both have powerful single-target skills, giving them great synergy with Agnea's Latent Power, All Together Now. While these subjobs are typically recommended for Partitio and Throné, as their Latent Powers allow for their single-target abilities to be used more frequently, an alternative answer is turn them into party-wide ones. The obvious drawback to this build - regularly refilling Latent Power - is addressed by Agnea's Invigorate And Inspire ability as well as the Inventor's Tin Horn.

Due to the flexibilty of subjobs, any character can fill any role with the right equipment and skills, with proper planning, any of the travelers can perform decently on any subjob.

Etymology[]

"Agnea" is a variant of the Greek name "Agnes" (Ἁγνή), meaning "holy" or "pure." Agnea's name reflects her innocence and optimism, as manifested in her goal to bring hope through her dancing.

Agnea's surname, "Bristarni," may be derived from the Danish word "briste," meaning "to burst" (likely, in context of her character, with happiness).

Trivia[]

  • Agnea is tied with Tressa as the youngest traveler in her game, and the mainline games as a whole, at age 18.
  • Agnea is one of only two main characters who does not kill any of their respective main chapter bosses or antagonists, the other being Partitio.
    • Incidentally, neither of the two's storylines involve fighting anyone who has anything to do with the Moonshade Order's machinations.
  • Like Hikari, Agnea's final chapter boss has more than one separate battle. But unlike his, the second battle with her final boss doesn't use any variation of "For the Dawn," with the second battle playing the "Song of Hope," a remix of her character theme "Agnea, The Dancer."
  • If Agnea is selected as the starting traveler, Pala will appear in her place in the epilogue to find all of the remaining travelers in New Delsta due to Agnea herself getting ready for an upcoming performance.
  • Agnea's battle line "May I have this dance?" is a tribute to the same line spoken by Primrose Azelhart.
  • During her Chapter 2 in New Delsta, Agnea can Allure the NPCs marked for her story even with a damaged reputation. Failure will knock down existing reputation points, but does not prevent her from repeatedly Alluring even when the player's reputation has suffered.
  • If Agnea Allures every quest-marked NPC during her Chapter 2, Gil will reward her with an Empowering Lychee (M).
  • Ochette calls Agnea "Aggie."
  • Although she doesn't mind others drinking, Agnea prefers to forgo alcohol in favor of raspberry juice.
  • Designer Naoki Ikushima designed the dancer Agnea to have a cheerful and sunny disposition, in contrast to Primrose, who has a dark past in the previous game.[2]
  • Writer Kakunoshin Futsuzawa wanted to make Agnea's story optimistic and cheerful, as the previous dancer had the darkest story. From that point the theme of becoming a star was born.[2]
  • Agnea's closing lines during the Epilogue are quoted from the original Octopath Traveler, where they appear after the completion of At Journey's End.
  • Both Agnea and Partitio receive gifts of clothing from their fathers before setting out on their journey; Agnea earns her mother's dress from Garud, whereas Partitio takes Papp's hat.
  • Although Agnea has practiced hard to speak like "city folk," she lapses back into her country accent when surprised.
  • When composing Agnea's theme, Yasunori Nishiki set out to convey both her cheerful dancer's sparkle and her straightforward, unpretentious rural upbringing. He styled her theme as Celtic jig, with a hint of melancholy but a refrain as bright and cheerful as her character.[3]
  • Composing the "Song of Hope" wasn’t part of Yasunori Nishiki's original plan, but when he heard the details of how Agnea’s storyline ends, he hurried to get it done in time. He had been planning to create an arrangement of her theme combined with "For the Dawn," like the other characters, but he was too invested in her story's ending to miss the opportunity. Handling arbitrarily chosen lyrics musically would have been difficult, so for the recording he decided to use lyrics sung in an invented language instead. The lyrics were written and sung by Kaon Kokudo, leaving room for the listener's imagination to ponder their meaning:
    • A: Shul go do falas / Argus elyum / Hesta do salas / O de ni so
    • B: Ini stuhr naut sa / Le stuh vi lillie / En ni stadt sa / Essa tuvie / Ini stuhr naut sa / Le stuh vi lillie / En ri nitti yasso salas
    • C: Hale so fan me soreya / Hale so fan na tidone / Hale so fan me soreya / Hale so fan na tidone / Fie
    • 2A: Shul go do falas / Argus elyum / Hesta do salas / O de ni so
    • 2C: Ini stuhr naut sa / Le stuh vi lillie / En ni stadt sa / Essa tuvie (Repeat)[4]
