Aelfric is a character in Octopath Traveler, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent and Octopath Traveler II. In Octopath Traveler, he is the 12th of the 13 gods of Orsterra, and will bestow the Cleric class to the player at the Shrine of the Flamebearer. In Octopath Traveler II, he is numbered among the eight gods of Solistia and enshrined at the Altar of the Flamebringer.

Story[]

"This grave and reverent priest is the twelfth child of thirteen. Perhaps because of his forgiving, unflappable disposition, he is always busy deaning up after his less judicious siblings." —Champions of the Continent

Champions of the Continent[]

Long before the events of Champions of the Continent and Octopath Traveler, Finis turned Aelfric into the Cleric's Ring. After passing from bearer to bearer (Sonzon being one of the known bearers), the ring eventually ended up in its father's hand once again, which bestowed it upon the Chosen One.

In Bestower of All events, Aelfric tests Rondo's resolve to become the next Flameguard and inherit his flames.

When Sazantos erased himself and the Ringbearer Chosen from every living people's memories, Aelfric invited his bearer's to his shrine to test their determination in keep fighting despite nobody remembering them and living peaceful lives. After seeing his bearer passing the Trial of Truth, Trial of Rebirth, Trial of Valor, and Trial of Faith, he decides to take form and challenges the Chosen One by himself as the final trial to test if they have the power to stop the one possessing both the blue and dark flames. Upon being defeated, he congratulates his bearer and opens the path to the Gate of Orsa in the Heavens.

Octopath Traveler[]

Approximately 1,600 years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler, Aelfric concluded the battle between the twelve other gods and Galdera by sealing him away in the afterworld. To do this, Aelfric called down celestial fire from the heavens, which became the Sacred Flame.

The Sacred Flame is lit within churches in Flamesgrace, Saintsbridge, and Goldshore. Every twenty years, a member of the Order of the Sacred Flame is to become the Flamebearer. They retrieve Aelfric's Lanthorn from the Cave of Origin and perform the Kindling ceremony in the aforementioned locations.

Octopath Traveler II[]

In Octopath Traveler II, Aelfric is part of a legend in which he and seven of his fellow gods appear in Solistia. Together, they sacrificed themselves in battle to defeat the wicked god Vide, whom they sealed away in Vidania with four Sacred Flames. Aelfric is the last of the eight gods to survive, defeating Vide with the power that his fallen siblings invested in him.

According to the Order of the Sacred Flame's scripture, Aelfric once left someone in Solistia to consort with humankind. Her name was Alpates, and she became the mother of the Lumina Clan who shared his blood. After her death, Alpates's children were overcome with despair, but Aelfric crafted a single mirror from her body, and its warm light relieved her clan of their grief.

Quotes[]

Champions of the Continent[]

"Awake... Knight who seeks power... Will you walk with Me? Will you be reduced to ash? Let the trial begin. Kill the one who stands before you. Do this and I will grant unto you My Flame." —Starting his trial upon Rondo
"So you refuse to step forward? Then allow me to give you a push." —Summoning Sacred Flame in Rondo's fight
"Knight who seeks power... There is something you lack. That is resolve. To follow the Flame... requires the resolve to overcome every desire. The will to reject all else for the sake of the path you believe in... Now, kill the one who stands before you. Prove that you are capable of inheriting My Flame." —After defeating the first round of Sacred Flames in Rondo's fight
"Chosen One... You were once a Guardian of Light. And now there are none who remember you. Why do you persist? Why forge ahead? What is it that you're trying to protect? Take a moment and search within yourself." —Starting his trial upon his Chosen One
"Ringbearer chosen.. Let me ask you one more time. Knowing that no one... Not a single one of those you wish to protect yet remembers you... Knowing that they do not spare even a single thought for your struggles... Knowing that only solitude awaits you... Will you yet persist in forging head?" —Confirming his Chosen One's resolve
"Ringbearer chosen... You have done well to reach this place. The path to the Heavens lies just ahead. The man who possesses flame both azure and dark is formidable indeed. Are you certain of your path? Do you truly have the strength to stop him? Then show me that strength. Show me... Aelfric the Flamebringer. I give you your final trial." —Before testing his Chosen One in battle
"Well done. I recognize both your strength and your determinaton. You are fit to travel this path. Farewell... My Chosen... Your ring finger was filled with warmth... I can think of only one who has a heart as azure as yours..." —Congratulating his Chosen One after battle

Trivia[]

  • In Champions of the Continent, Aelfric shapeshifts into a wolf in the Path to the Flamebearer's Shrine in the obscured world when traveling to his Sanctum.
  • In Octopath Traveler II, Aelfric's statue appears alongside Aeber's at Flamechurch: Cathedral Entrance, making him one of only two gods to receive this honor.
  • Temenos mentions to Agnea in travel banter that, after Aelfric summoned the Sacred Flame, the flame died and Aelfric grew ragged. Where this event fits into the gods' timeline remains unknown.
  • In Octopath Traveler II, Aelfric is briefly playable at the start of Temenos's Chapter 1. This scene was shaped by Temenos's preconceptions of his god, given that this playable sequence takes place during a fictional narration. As such, the details of this scene should not be taken as fact.
