"One day Ventus the Third suddenly stopped painting and never touched a brush again. I'm setting about to find out why." —Inquiring Youth

A Royal Secret is a side story in Octopath Traveler. It is activated by speaking to the Inquiring Youth by the fountain in Stonegard Heights.

Travel to West Stonegard Pass and enter the Tomb of Kings. Use the Inquire/Scrutinize Path Action to glean Gravekeeper's Information from the Nameless Gravekeeper, located at the end of the tomb.

The story ends once the Gravekeeper's Information is shared with the Inquiring Youth.

According to the gravekeeper, Ventus the Third worked hard to better his realm, but a nasty civil war eventually tore the kingdom asunder.

Alternatively, use the Guide/Allure Path Action to bring the Patrician Youth, located in Stonegard Valleys, to the Inquiring Youth, and reveal the king had in fact abdicated to pursue becoming a painter and had a lookalike ascend the throne.

A descendant of Ventus the Third confessed the astounding truth—the former king gave his title to another to return to his true calling, art.

Trivia[]

  • After talking to the Inquiring Youth via the Inquire/Scrutinize route, he will talk about a civil war led by two brothers, the younger one the son of the Queen, the older one the illegitimate son of the King's mistress, with the younger winning the war. The official book Octopath Traveler: The Complete Guide reveals that the younger brother was Simeon, who went on to meet Lyblac and receive nigh-immortality from her. It seems that the fake King Ventus the Third was the grandfather of Simeon and Simeon himself is a distant relative of the Nameless Gravekeeper who is a descendant of his half-brother.
  • Upon completion of the side story via the Guide/Allure route, Patrician Youth is relocated to Stonegard Heights.
