"How long do you plan on playing the part of the noble warrior? Submit to your nature, Hikari. Hehehe... I know you better than anyone, Hikari. You have a thirst that can never be sated. Show them, Hikari. Show them your face stained crimson." —"Hikari"

"Hikari" is a dark manifestation of Hikari in Octopath Traveler II. Fueled by the cursed blood of Clan Ku, "Hikari" speaks to Hikari when he is facing or defeating opponents, urging him to cut down his foes and revel in wanton bloodshed.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

"Hikari" is identical to Hikari with the addition of glowing red eyes and echoing voice. He always appears wreathed in dark fire, a sign of his connection to the Shadow.

Personality[]

"Hikari" is tenacious, violent, and bloodthirsty, encouraging Hikari to butcher his opponents and spatter their blood across the ground. Time and again he returns to torment Hikari, even though Hikari repeatedly overcomes his demands. At last "Hikari" attempts to overpower Hikari entirely, eradicating Hikari's peace-loving nature to rule him permanently.

History[]

When Hikari was a child, he and his mother Kura were ambushed by assassins who sought to claim the young prince's life. Hikari attempted to defend his mother, but she was fatally wounded and died in the attack. In his grief, Hikari succumbed to his accursed blood, and "Hikari" appeared for the first time. "Hikari" slaughtered the assassins with demented laughter, turning next on Hikari's friend Jin Mei, who barely warded off the dark power. When Hikari came to, he had no recollection of what had occurred, and he feared the dark power that flowed through his veins.

Story[]

Years later, Hikari has grown and honed his warrior's skills. During his Chapter 1, he confronts his friend-turned-traitor Ritsu atop the Crest of Heroes, defeating him in a battle of blades. After his victory, however, Hikari hears a voice in his head urging him to kill Ritsu. With a force of will, Hikari banishes the voice and spares his defeated opponent.

"Hikari" returns in Hikari's Chapter 2. When Hikari defeats his next opponent, Zeto the Butcher, this dark voice returns, and "Hikari" manifests in a visible form. "Hikari" demands that Hikari slaughter Zeto, but once again, Hikari drives his dark self away and ends the fight without bloodshed.

During his Chapter 3, Hikari duels General Rou over a shipment of smuggled weapons. "Hikari" exerts more influence over Hikari this time, momentarily taking over his body and forcing him to use Shadow's Hold in battle. Hikari manages to stop himself from killing General Rou, but the struggle leaves him exhausted and unable to pursue Rou and Ritsu as they escape. General Rou warns Ritsu about the "accursed blood of Clan Ku," which "leaves no survivors" on the battlefield.

At last, during his Chapter 5, Hikari confronts his brother Mugen over Ku's throne. He successfully defeats Mugen in battle, but "Hikari" manifests immediately afterward, preventing him from progressing any further. Mugen vanishes, the throne room plunges into shadow, and Hikari has no choice but to confront "Hikari" to determine which of their wills shall control him from this day on. "Hikari" uses Shadow's Hold abilities during the battle, eventually spiriting himself into Hikari and preventing Hikari from taking any further actions.

For a moment, Hikari seems lost. Then, one by one, the memories of his friends help him break free from the Shadow's influence and retaliate against "Hikari." He surges with power, automatically driven to max Boost on each turn, until he smites "Hikari" down for the last time.

"Hikari" vanishes in a surge of smoke, and Hikari's innate power transforms from Shadow's Hold to Light's Radiance.

Trivia[]

  • In travel banter with Hikari, Ochette claims that she can smell two distinct scents on him: one very warm, the other pungent. She describes the second scent (belonging to "Hikari") as coming from deep inside him, being "not very pleasant."
